Music shaped me.

It made me who I am today. Period. Not a day goes by that I don’t blast music in some way, shape or form.  I’m truly blessed to have made a living from making music.   I always have some kind of music on all day long whether I’m working or playing;  it’s always with me.  I firmly believe that music, food and love are three of the most important things we have.  That and family of course.   Which leads me to this…

From the first time I overheard Tom Jones blaring from my parent’s kitchen when I was 5, I was already hooked on music.  So were my parents apparently.  The music, food and love seeds were being subconsciously planted in my head.  The soundtrack of the music, the aromas of the food and the togetherness of the family made big impressions on me. I know that music and food are closely related. When I sit down to write a song usually I have a blank canvas. Same goes in the kitchen most days.  I start with an empty pan and create from within. I digress…

As a teen it became The Blasters, Elvis Costello and Devo leaking from the walls of my big brother’s room that really pulled me in. I was on autopilot after that searching out any/all types of music I could find. Call it my market research. Then, after years and years and years of hard work and a few lucky breaks, I finally made a name for myself with Sugar Ray. I had no come full spectrum.  From listening to music, to writing it, to producing it, I have had a love affair with music since probably before I was born. Music has been in my family for generations and I hope I pass my love for music on to my daughter. When I strip everything down, I’m just a fan of music.
